Tiger Woods was arrested on DUI charges Friday afternoon after being involved in a two-vehicle car crash about four miles from his home in Jupiter Island, Florida. Woods was booked in jail on three charges and authorities suspect he was impaired on medication or other drugs.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office announced Woods’ arrest at a 5 p.m. ET press conference. Woods was due to be released on bond late Friday.

What happened to Tiger Woods?

According to law enforcement officials, Woods was driving on a two-lane road in Jupiter Island, Florida, around 2 p.m. ET Friday afternoon when he attempted to pass a truck in front of him. Wood’s Range Rover clipped the back of the truck, officials said, rolled onto the driver’s side door and eventually slid to a stop. There was no oncoming traffic at the time and he did not hit another vehicle beyond the truck in front of him. Responding authorities suspected Woods to have been driving while impaired and arrested him.

Was anyone injured in the crash?

No. Local sheriff’s authorities said there were no injuries to either Woods or the driver of the other vehicle. Woods climbed out of the window of his Land Rover after the crash and was able to communicate with authorities. He appeared “lethargic,” according to officials, and tried to explain injuries he sustained from previous accidents.

What has Woods been charged with?

Following Friday’s accident, Woods was charged with a DUI with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test. He was taken into custody around 3 p.m. ET and will remain jailed for at least eight hours before being released on bond, Marin County Sheriff John Budensiek said.

This marks Woods’ second DUI charge, having been charged with the first in a 2017 incident where police found him asleep at the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz with the engine running. That incident also occurred in Jupiter. Woods later cited an “unexpected reaction to prescribed medications” as the cause in an apology to fans, confirming that alcohol was not involved.

What are authorities alleging Woods was impaired with?
Budensiek said law enforcement believes Woods was under the influence of medication “or some other kind of drug.” Police officers did not see medication in his vehicle. Woods submitted to an alcohol breathlyzer, which came back as 0.00, according to authorities, but refused to undergo a urinalysis.

“He cooperated with the breathalyzer, and then the urine he wanted no part of,” Budensiek said.

“We will never get the results of what he was actually impaired with at the time of the crash,” Budensiek also said.

Was anyone in the car with Woods?

No. Authorities said Woods was driving alone. The driver of the truck Woods hit also did not have any passengers.

History of other accidents

Woods’ most recent accident was the third reported accident and fourth driving-related incident.

Most recently, in February 2021, Woods was involved in a single-car crash outside of Los Angeles that resulted in significant lower-body injuries that required multiple surgeries. The injuries included compound, open fractures of the tibia and fibula that required multiple surgeries.

Prior to that, Woods had also been involved in a single-car accident, crashing into a fire hydrant in his neighbor’s yard back in 2009, for which he did not face any charges.

In 2017, Woods was found unconscious behind the wheel of his vehicle in Jupiter, Florida. He was charged with a DUI, with toxicology reports revealing the presence of five drugs in his system, including Vicodin, Dilaudid, Xanax, Ambien and THC. Woods pleaded guilty to reckless driving, sentenced to one year of probation while completing a DUI first-offender program.

What is the status of Woods’ golf career?

Woods has not played in a professional tournament since the 2024 Open Championship. He had been sidelined after undergoing Achilles surgery followed by back surgery seven months later. Three days before Friday’s crash, Woods made his competitive return, participating in the TGL championship with the Jupiter Links team he captains. He has not yet announced whether he planned to compete in next month’s Masters.
