The 2017 CMT Awards aired Wednesday night (June 7), and it brought out all of country music’s kings and queens. That included American Idol veteran Carrie Underwood and Keith Urban, who performed a stripped-down (but still flawless) rendition of their hit song “The Fighter.”
I know what you’re thinking: Another performance of “The Fighter” (which, admittedly, is a totally valid thought)? Underwood and Urban have performed this song quite literally everywhere, including the Grammys and ACM Awards; however, their version at tonight’s CMT Awards stood out in more ways than one.
“OK, everybody, this is special. We’ve got something truly incredible for you right now. You’ve all heard Keith and Carrie sing their smash hit ‘The Fighter,’ but I guarantee you’ve never heard it like this,” CMT Awards host and Nashville actor Charles Esten said right before their performance. And he was right!
And here’s a snippet of the stripped-down intro that may or may not make you cry. (If you haven’t cried listening to Carrie Underwood at least once, are you even human?)
For the performance, Underwood wore a Raisa and Vanessa shirt with an actual train and a pair of black (maybe leather?) pants. She paired the dramatic look with long, black earrings and a chic updo. Urban kept things simple with a T-shirt-and-pants combo. (His hair, as always, looked majestic.)
