Spencer Hatcher’s Mother Killed, Father Injured During Home Invasion In Virginia

Country artist Spencer Hatcher is mourning the loss of his beloved mother, Holly, who was brutally killed during a home invasion on August 3.

At 11:58 PM on Sunday, August 3, authorities in Virginia received a call from Spencer’s father, 65-year-old Michael Hatcher. As 6 News out of Richmond reports, Michael called to report a home invasion.

When deputies arrived at the Hatchers’ residence, Michael appeared outside with visible injuries. The suspect, later identified as 41-year-old Kevin Moses Walker, was found deceased in the driveway. 6 News reports that Walker was killed after Michael Hatcher took a handgun out of his vehicle and fired one shot in an effort to stop Walker.

62-year-old Holly Hatcher, a well-respected teacher in the area, was found inside the home with fatal stab wounds. Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson spoke about the brutality of the crime, saying, “I’ve been in law enforcement for 31 years and I have never seen anything like this in my entire career.”

Speaking about the offender, Kevin Moses Walker, Sheriff Hutcheson said, “This is a highly unusual, apparently completely random [attack] with an individual with no known history of violent behavior of any kind, or even criminal behavior of any kind.”

Details About The Suspect’s Movements Prior To The Crime At The Hatcher Home

Walker rented a campsite at the Endless Caverns in New Market, Virginia, on August 1. That afternoon, he toured the caverns before visiting a nearby Walmart, where he purchased a sleeping bag and a large knife.

On the morning of August 2, the Virginia State Police responded to a report of an abandoned vehicle on Endless Caverns Road. They discovered the Caverns’ store had been broken into. Authorities concluded that Walker had broken into the store and entered the caverns, but nothing had been stolen.

Felony warrants were obtained for Walker. Then, authorities received the call about the break-in at the Hatcher residence late on August 3.

Since Walker is deceased, charges have not been filed in connection with the crime at the Hatcher home. However, the investigation remains open.

The Hatchers Share Gratitude For The Public’s Support

Spencer Hatcher canceled his upcoming appearances after losing his mother. He shared a statement on his social media pages, writing:

“It is with a heavy heart and overwhelming sadness that – due to a monumental loss in our family – I must cancel my upcoming shows. I hope to make these dates up to my fans in the future. I appreciate everyone that has lent their support to me and my loved ones. We ask that everyone please respect our family’s privacy at this time.”

Hatcher’s friends and fans shared their support for him in the comments.

The Hatchers expressed gratitude for all the prayers during this difficult time. 6 News reports that Michael Hatcher, Spencer’s father, said, “You have made it much more bearable through your outpouring of love and your caring and your kindness and support to all of us.”

Who Is Spencer Hatcher?

Spencer Hatcher grew up on a farm in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley. He started playing bluegrass and country music at a young age. He began playing the mandolin at age eight and started playing the banjo by age 12.

Holly Hatcher played organ and piano, while Michael Hatcher played guitar and the banjo. Spencer’s younger brother, Connor, learned to play bass, so they formed a band called The Hatcher Boys.

Spencer and Conner spent Friday evenings playing bluegrass music at their community center. However, as the “About” section on his website details, Spencer started feeling pulled toward country music.

Spencer got a record deal with Stone Country Records. But shortly after that, he suffered a terrible accident.

Michael and Spencer climbed on the roof to look at a broken chimney. Spencer lost his footing, and fell 20 feet onto the hard rock below. He fractured his pelvis in three places, broke three ribs, and suffered a pulmonary contusion to his right lung. Doctors called it a “miracle” that Spencer didn’t sustain a head injury. Remarkably, Spencer returned to the stage three weeks later.

You’ve likely seen Spencer’s videos online. In 2020, his cover of Johnny Cash‘s “Folsom Prison Blues” took off on TikTok, generating over 2.4 million views. He now has over 850,000 followers across his various social media platforms.

Hatcher just released a new song, “When She Calls Me Cowboy,” shortly before his mother’s tragic death.

In addition to signing his record deal in 2024, Spencer also partnered with PepsiCo. He co-wrote and performed a bluegrass tune featured in a nationwide commercial for Mountain Dew.
