Blake Shelton once held the keys to a Toby Keith classic, and he tossed them away, thinking it was junk.

During an interview on The Bobby Bones Show, Shelton confessed that he originally recorded “I Wanna Talk About Me,” the country-rap anthem that went on to become one of Toby Keith’s signature No. 1 hits back in 2001. At the time, Shelton’s producer, Bobby Braddock, handed him the song because Shelton was always fooling around in the studio with silly raps. They cut the track, figuring it might show off a lighter side of the Oklahoma crooner.

Then the label stepped in, and they ran a focus group. The reaction was brutal. Shelton recalled, “It was so terrible that they said not only do we not want this to be a single, we don’t even think you should put it on your album. It is that horrifying of a song.” Shelton laughed as he told the story, but you can still hear the sting in his voice. He trusted the suits, scrapped the track, and moved on.

That decision turned into one of the wildest what-ifs in country history. Bobby Braddock shopped the tune elsewhere, and Toby Keith grabbed it. The rest is history. “I Wanna Talk About Me” not only landed on Keith’s 2001 album Pull My Chain but also spent multiple weeks at No. 1. It showed Nashville that a little country swagger mixed with playful spoken-word delivery could become radio gold.

Looking back, Shelton admits it was an awkward moment, but he holds no grudges. He later told Jimmy Fallon, “I think it found its right home.” And in truth, he might be right. The brash humor and confident delivery fit Toby perfectly. Shelton would go on to carve out his own lane with heartfelt ballads, barn-burner anthems, and the kind of Oklahoma charm that eventually made him one of country’s biggest stars and a mainstay on The Voice.

Still, it is wild to imagine Shelton in the early 2000s rapping his way through a track that ended up defining Toby Keith’s run as a rule-breaking hitmaker. The song felt risky and even silly, but that was exactly the point. Keith had the guts to take it to the radio, and fans ate it up. Shelton missed out, yet he learned early that Nashville’s so-called experts do not always have the pulse of the people.

And if you think there was any bad blood, you would be wrong. Shelton and Keith were close, so much so that when Toby passed away in February 2024 after a long battle with stomach cancer, Blake delivered a heartfelt tribute at the American Country Music Awards. “Toby was a great friend to me and he was a real straight shooter who was larger than life,” Shelton told the crowd, his voice cracking with emotion. “He always would shoot you straight, right till the very end of his very brave ride, that ended way too soon.”

Blake Shelton's Label Rejected "I Wanna Talk About Me" and Toby Keith Turned It Into a Monster Hit

So maybe Blake Shelton did not get to ride “I Wanna Talk About Me” to the top of the charts, but Toby Keith did. In doing so, he gave the genre a new twist and another timeless hit. Sometimes, a song just has to find the right cowboy to carry it. Shelton passed on it, Toby owned it, and country music got one of its most unforgettable anthems.
