Charlie Kirk’s Death Rocks The Country Music Community

On September 10th, conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was brutally shot and killed while speaking on campus at Utah Valley University. The 31-year-old was the CEO and co-founder of Turning Point USA and hosted a daily radio talk show, The Charlie Kirk Show.

While news of the shooting spread like wildfire, President Donald Trump was the first to confirm Kirk’s death officially. He wrote on Truth Social:

“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead. No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”

Kirk left behind his wife, Erika, a three-year-old daughter, and a one-year-old son.

Country stars, including Jason Aldean, Lauren Alaina, Lee Greenwood, Parker McCollum, and more, shared their reactions to the heartbreaking news online. Many had known Kirk personally, while others had followed his show and his work with Turning Point. Aldean wrote:

“Charlie Kirk was one of the kindest, smartest and bravest people I’ve ever met. I’m honored to have met and spoke with him on a few occasions. He was a man of peace and wanted nothing but the best for our country and its youth.”

The devastating act of violence that took Charlie Kirk’s life sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Flags were flown at half-mast, prayer vigils were held, and moments of silence were observed at major sporting events.

Additionally, many musicians took time during their concerts to remember Kirk, address the division in our country, or condemn violence.

While performing in Hot Springs, Arkansas, Jamey Johnson dedicated a performance of “Lead Me Home” to Charlie Kirk. The emotional ballad was released on Johnson’s 2006 album, The Dollar. It begins:

I have seen my last tomorrow /
I am holding my last breath /
Goodbye, sweet world of sorrow /
My new life begins with death.

I am standing on the mountain /
I can hear the angels’ songs /
I am reaching over Jordan /
Take my hand, Lord, lead me home.

“Lead me Home” acknowledges the sorrow of death while emphasizing the comfort of going home to be with the Lord. Before singing the moving gospel song, Johnson announced:

“This one’s for our friend Charlie.”
