Dolly Parton thought she was walking into a routine business meeting. Instead, the room filled with bagpipes, laughter, and a message straight from the heart of rock royalty. U2 orchestrated a surprise fit for an American legend, sending a bagpiper to serenade Dolly with “Happy Birthday,” followed by a cake signed simply, “Love… Bono.” The band never appeared — and somehow that made it even more powerful. At 80, Dolly’s milestone isn’t just about age, but about impact, generosity, and a lifetime of love returned. From state honors in Tennessee to tributes across music’s biggest stages, this birthday felt less like a celebration — and more like a thank-you tour from the world itself.
U2 surprises Dolly Parton for 80th birthday

Parton celebrates a life milestone
U2 pulled out all the stops for Dolly Parton’s 80th birthday today (Jan 19th), surprising the country icon during a business meeting. The Irish rockers brought in a bagpipe player for a unique rendition of “Happy Birthday,” followed by a celebratory cake. In a touching personal gesture, the cake featured “Happy Birthday” candles and a sweet message written in icing: “Love… Bono.”

“Now that’s what you call a surprise! This old bag sure feels the love! Thank you, Bono and U2 for making my birthday extra special,” Parton shares in the caption with the video of the impromptu moment.
The band did not appear, but Parton thanked the bagpiper, who confirmed the gift was from all four members. Dolly replied, “Bono, I know him personally.”
Dolly’s 80th has been defined by a massive wave of tributes from the country music world and significant state honors.
Last week, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee officially proclaimed January 19, 2026, as Dolly Parton Day across the state to honor her musical legacy and her philanthropic work, such as her Imagination Library.
Parton has also narrated the short film, Tennessee: The Original Frontier, that celebrates the iconic people, places, and events that define the state’s contributions to America for the past 250 years. The piece highlights the state’s history, from its early frontier roots and agricultural heritage to its lasting influence on music and culture. Parton’s narration underscores the pride, resilience, and optimism that have long defined the spirit of the Volunteer State.

On January 16th, Parton released a reimagined version of her 1977 hit “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” featuring a powerhouse lineup of Miley Cyrus, Reba McEntire, Lainey Wilson, and Queen Latifah. True to her nature, Dolly announced that proceeds from her new single will benefit pediatric cancer research at a children’s hospital in Nashville.
Over the weekend, the Grand Ole Opry hosted the fourth annual Opry Goes Dolly. While Dolly herself stayed home to rest following recent health challenges, stars like Vince Gill and Lainey Wilson performed her classics.
Earlier this month, Parton launched her multimedia symphonic experience, Threads: My Songs in Symphony, in new U.S. cities for the 2026 season. Developed in partnership with Schirmer Theatrical and Sony Music Publishing, this innovative concert series combines dazzling orchestral arrangements by David Hamilton, immersive visuals by Adam Grannick, and intimate storytelling, exploring Dolly’s songs, life, and stories in a full-evening symphonic journey.
