But during a lighthearted moment in a new clip, the three couldnât resist bringing up the one name fans still associate with the showâs golden era â Blake Shelton.
o matter how many seasons go by, one name will always echo through the halls of âThe Voiceâ soundstage:Â Blake Shelton. But if you know the showâs history, it just makes sense.
During a new Blind Audition on Season 29, contestant JW Griffin took the stage with a performance of âLong Haired Country Boyâ by The Charlie Daniels Band. The country classic clearly struck a chord because all three current coaches (Adam Levine, Kelly Clarkson, and John Legend) slammed their buttons and turned their chairs. Yep, a three-chair turn. Not too shabby.
What followed was less drama and more playful chaos; the kind of banter longtime fans live for. And somehow, even without sitting in a red chair, Blake Shelton became the most talked-about coach in the room.
A Three-Chair Turn (With a Side of Blake)
After JW Griffin wrapped his performance, the coaches immediately launched into their pitches (seen above).
John Legend kicked things off with honesty and charm, telling the contestant, âI would love to coach you, not because Iâm some expert in country music, though I have been on country radio as well. I even have a CMT Award.â A solid flex; subtle, but respectful.
After a bit of banter, Kelly Clarkson wasted zero time responding with, âI do think that Iâve won with country artists, and they have not. So pick me.â
Letâs be real; Kelly knows her track record speaks for itself.
Then Adam Levine jumped in and took things in a very specific direction. âIf you pick me, youâre going to have a co-coach in Blake Shelton because heâs going to love you⌠Iâm going to pester him on a daily basis.â
And just like that, Blake was back in the chat.
Legend wasnât about to let that slide, chiming in with, âI have Blakeâs number too. We text all the time.â
NBCUniversalLevine tried to counter with, âYes, butâŚâ only to be cut off by Legend saying, âDonât believe this one-on-one relationship.â Levine finished his thought anyway: âThe Adam and Blake thing.â
If youâve watched past seasons, you know exactly what heâs talking about. That bromance-turned-rivalry practically built the showâs early identity.
Kelly, however, had the final word on the Blake debate: âI am not calling Blake for help. Blake knows Iâve got this.â Sheâs definitely confident and unbothered, making this moment all the more iconic.
Blake Sheltonâs Shadow Still Looms Large
Even though Blake Shelton is no longer a coach on âThe Voice,â his presence clearly still lingers. NBCâs official âThe Voiceâ account even leaned into the moment, captioning the clip: âAll roads still lead to Blake Shelton.â
Itâs a smart move. Blake was a staple of the series for years, and his playful rivalry with Adam Levine helped shape the showâs tone. So hearing his name tossed around like heâs still just a phone call away? It feels nostalgic in the best way.
At the end of the day, though, this wasnât about old rivalries. It was about JW Griffin. And after all the friendly back-and-forth, he ultimately chose Team Kelly, locking in his spot in the next round.
Honestly, it seems like a strong fit. Kellyâs confidence says sheâs ready to guide him without backup, and her history with country artists makes her a solid choice.
And if Blake does get a random phone call from Adam? Something tells us he wouldnât mind one bit.
