Despite his sunny personality, the star has\u00a0lived through the worst experience a parent can ever imagine<\/a>: his son\u2019s cancer diagnosis.<\/span><\/p>\n

Michael\u2019s eldest son Noah<\/a>, now 11 years old, was just three when the family received the tragic\u00a0news that he had liver cancer<\/a>\u00a0in 2016.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are devastated by the recent cancer diagnosis of our eldest son Noah, who is currently in treatment in the US,\u201d Michael wrote in a statement at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLuisana and I have put our careers on hold in order to devote all our time and attention to helping Noah get well.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He recently revealed on the\u00a0Diary of a CEO<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>podcast that the shocking news came at a time when the \u201cSway With Me\u201d singer had been doggedly pursuing his career.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it actually happened, I was going through, I think, a crisis,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think I had my priorities straight. My family was always the love [of my life], and I don\u2019t think I was a terrible guy, but it was blinders: career, ambition. How do I become the baddest, biggest, best? More ego, more power, more money?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Everything changed when Michael and Luisana received the devastating news.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we went through was the worst possible thing that you could hear as a parent, and as maybe a human being,\u201d he told Australia\u2019s\u00a0Today Show<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI much rather would have it have been me. Many times I wish that it had been.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He revealed that he had been too career-focused prior to Noah\u2019s cancer diagnosis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Noah\u2019s ordeal changed the singer intrinsically; he said on the podcast that it has taught him to appreciate the little things in life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMy son\u2019s cancer diagnosis rocked my world and pulled the curtain from over my eyes,\u201d\u00a0he said. \u201cThat was a sledgehammer to my reality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI will never be carefree again in my life, and that\u2019s okay. It is a privilege for me to exist. That pain, the fear, the suffering that comes with those sort of things, I guess it\u2019s part of this beautiful life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Thankfully, the family got through this tough time, and Noah went into remission in 2017; Michael revealed his desperate wish for Noah to recover. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI remember closing my eyes and saying to myself, \u2018If we get out of this, I\u2019m going to live a different life, a better life,’\u201d\u00a0he explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I did. I made that promise to myself in like a moment. I want to be kinder. I want to be more empathetic. I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0ever want to allow that ego and that false self to take over. I want to know how lucky I am.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Noah went into remission in 2017 and inherited his father\u2019s musical talents<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Noah is now happy and healthy and the proud big brother to Michael and Luisana\u2019s three other children: Elias, eight, Vida, six, and Cielo, two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
