But when details of the plan began to emerge, several experts reacted with shock and disbelief.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201dIt looks like Trump has capitulated massively\u201d,\u00a0said Sky News U.S. correspondent Mark Stone.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-af0e36e22b0c1242ffe06c974d4811b4\" class=\"newsner-af0e36e22b0c1242ffe06c974d4811b4 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-just-an-hour-before-trump-s-deadline\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Just an hour before Trump\u2019s deadline<\/h2>\n<p>Tuesday started with Donald Trump warning that a \u201cwhole civilization\u201d of 90 million Iranians could face annihilation.<\/p>\n<p>But then, the United States and Iran agreed to a temporary two-week ceasefire \u2014 just under an hour before\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0deadline to escalate military action was set to expire.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-f2470ce44b05a4f59a688d33cb9cb0b4\" class=\"newsner-f2470ce44b05a4f59a688d33cb9cb0b4 newsner-incide_content_once\"><\/div>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2026\/04\/07\/iran-peace-talks-islamabad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Axios<\/a>\u00a0reporter Barak Ravid, a longtime authority on international conflicts, Pakistan played a key role in the negotiations. Behind the scenes, Egypt was instrumental in bringing the U.S. and Iran closer together, and Turkey also helped facilitate talks, he said in a tweet.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the New York Times, citing three Iranian sources, reports that China stepped in at the last minute. Announcing the decision to hold off on further strikes, Trump revealed that Iran had presented a 10-point proposal, calling it a\u00a0<em>\u201cworkable basis on which to negotiate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The ceasefire marks a fragile diplomatic breakthrough after days of missile and drone attacks across the Middle East. Talks are expected to continue in Islamabad, following mediation efforts by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1430223538\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-97fcebb3bbf58a9c9ea043eb8b8d84c4\" class=\"newsner-97fcebb3bbf58a9c9ea043eb8b8d84c4 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-what-s-in-iran-s-proposal\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s in Iran\u2019s proposal?<\/h2>\n<p>According to Iranian state media, Tehran has made clear that it will only agree to end the war once the details are worked out in accordance with a 10\u2011point peace plan allegedly sent to Washington through Pakistani intermediaries. The list contains several conditions the United States has historically opposed:<\/p>\n<p>While full details haven\u2019t been officially confirmed, Iranian state media claims the plan includes sweeping demands, such as:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Non-aggression pact between the US and Iran<\/li>\n<li>Continuation of Iran\u2019s control over the\u00a0Strait of Hormuz<\/li>\n<li>Recognition of Iran\u2019s nuclear enrichment rights<\/li>\n<li>Lifting of all primary US sanctions<\/li>\n<li>Lifting of all secondary sanctions affecting third-party countries<\/li>\n<li>Termination of all UN Security Council resolutions against Iran<\/li>\n<li>Termination of all International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board resolutions<\/li>\n<li>Payment of compensation to Iran for damages<\/li>\n<li>Withdrawal of US combat forces from the region<\/li>\n<li>Cessation of war across all fronts, including conflicts involving Iran-backed groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon<\/li>\n<li>Ceasefire linked to Hormuz reopening<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"h-a-ceasefire-tied-to-oil-flow\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A ceasefire tied to oil flow<\/h2>\n<p>At the heart of the agreement is the Strait of Hormuz \u2014 one of the world\u2019s most important oil routes. Iran has agreed to allow controlled traffic through the strait for two weeks, a crucial move given that roughly 20% of the world\u2019s oil supply passes through it. Stone\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/iran-war-latest-trump-tehran-us-israel-kharg-island-netanyahu-lebanon-strikes-drone-live-sky-news-13509565?postid=11480301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">spoke briefly<\/a>\u00a0with Trump by phone overnight following the ceasefire announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Trump reportedly told him, \u201cI haven\u2019t got long, be quick,\u201d before adding that he felt the situation was \u201cgreat\u2026 very good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He went on to describe the military operations as a complete success, calling it \u201ca complete victory, a victory in military terms.\u201d Trump further asserted that, in every other sense as well, it amounted to \u201ca complete victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-level-of-incompetence-is-stunning\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201dThe level of incompetence is stunning\u201d<\/h2>\n<p>Not everyone sees the temporary ceasefire as a win for the White House. Tuesday\u2019s agreement was shaped by the highly charged and polarized emotions that Trump consistently inspires.<\/p>\n<p>Some critics even mocked it as another \u201cTACO\u201d moment \u2014 \u201cTrump Always Chickens Out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democratic lawmakers weighed in on the ceasefire, offering a mix of relief and criticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStopping war is good,\u201d Senator Ruben Gallego wrote on X. \u201cI am glad our men and women in uniform will be out of danger. We can criticize why we got into this war, the illegality of it and holding the Trump admin accountable. But right now I am relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator Chris Murphy called Iran\u2019s control of the Strait of Hormuz a \u201chistory-changing win\u201d for Tehran. \u201cThe level of incompetence is both stunning and heartbreaking,\u201d he said on X.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-551104936\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-0a20120b7ddf07c1a94038d8c9552ec1\" class=\"newsner-0a20120b7ddf07c1a94038d8c9552ec1 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Senator Ed Markey added, \u201cI\u2019m glad there is a reported ceasefire deal with Iran. But we shouldn\u2019t be in this illegal war in the first place. And Donald Trump can\u2019t simply threaten war crimes with impunity. Congress needs to get back in session now to stop this war and remove Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What happens next?
