But going to space isn\u2019t something your body takes lightly \u2013 it can come with side effects once you return to Earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"35739\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" type=\"post_tag\">NASA<\/a>\u00a0astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, alongside Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen, are scheduled to return to Earth on Friday, April 10.\u00a0<a id=\"182845\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/artemis-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" type=\"post_tag\">The spacecraft<\/a>\u00a0will make a planned splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego at 8:07 p.m. ET (1:07 a.m. BST). Instead of landing on solid ground, the crew will descend by parachute into open water, where recovery teams will be waiting, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tyla.com\/news\/where-when-artemis-ii-will-land-moon-mission-063620-20260408?fbclid=IwY2xjawREIvtleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETBXd0tob2NpcjBZS04zOHBMc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHkFfNoBFJzCIjUGTeLUKFXW4exE1Pnyp2v7CpSD_XSLP52TrIlSd4klyRc_E_aem_YsEJzwg-KfQup6lx0pc4Ig\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Tyla.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-c01a529532e164855b5fdec769a26aa6\" class=\"newsner-c01a529532e164855b5fdec769a26aa6 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<p>Once they enter the planet\u2019s atmosphere \u2013 \u201criding a fireball\u201d at around 25,000 mph\u2013 they rely on an advanced heat shield to protect them from temperatures roughly half that of the sun. Helping them safely out of the spacecraft is a joint effort by NASA and the Department of War.<\/p>\n<p>NASA-contracted engineer Jason Endley said: \u201cThen that\u2019s where my job comes in, of recovering the crew module alongside all the other NASA and Amentum employees we have on the ship,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unilad.com\/news\/us-news\/artemis-2-splashdown-astronauts-side-effects-return-earth-216410-20260410?utm_content=unilad&amp;utm_medium=Social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;fbclid=IwY2xjawRFuuRleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETBXd0tob2NpcjBZS04zOHBMc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHkPdXYEXaNW93XZjbaoCDDIkCf1Rs0yNLPdTCVdywweDr-LLMX2fiLGPDNA1_aem_nojxyuxo7ou-rY85Q5haOw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">UNILAD.<\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-7b16cc680dca2ac8af89ba4ab25f90b3\" class=\"newsner-7b16cc680dca2ac8af89ba4ab25f90b3 newsner-incide_content_once\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-artemis-ii-landing\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Artemis II landing<\/h2>\n<p>After their time in zero gravity, however, they may experience some side effects once they\u2019re back home.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Fong, founder of the Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme Environment Medicine at University College London, told the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cj0vyzmmy50o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">BBC:<\/a>\u00a0\u201cIn some experiments with rats, they\u2019ve seen up to a third of muscle from particular muscle groups being lost within seven to 10 days of flight \u2013 that\u2019s a huge, huge loss,\u201d according to UNILAD.<\/p>\n<p>To help prevent muscle loss, the crew reportedly follows scheduled workouts using a device known as a flywheel, similar to a multi-purpose rowing machine.<\/p>\n<p>Hansen explained: \u201cWe can change the dynamics of this device so that we can do weightlifting with it. So we can do squats. We can do dead lifts. We can do curls. We can do high pulls.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-1209817381\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-d2aff342679de732ed446141ed22732e\" class=\"newsner-d2aff342679de732ed446141ed22732e newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>Initial medical checkups will be performed aboard a nearby naval vessel, the USS John P. Murtha, once the crew is back.<\/p>\n<p>Being in space can also affect balance, with the inner ear becoming disrupted. Jasmin Moghbeli, who spent 200 days in space, said: \u201cWith eyes closed, it was almost impossible to walk in a straight line,\u201d according to UNILAD.<\/p>\n<p>Andreas Mogensen, also part of the same mission, said: \u201cI felt wobbly for the first two days.
