Donald Trump is threatening to pull the United States out of NATO \u2013 a move experts warn could leave America dangerously alone on the world stage, with some cautioning the country \u201cmight not even survive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Venting his frustration over what he claimed is the failure of allies to help America in its war against Iran, President Donald Trump told\u00a0The Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0NATO is a \u201cpaper tiger\u201d and that the U.S. leaving the alliance is now \u201cbeyond reconsideration\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say [it\u2019s] beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and Putin knows that too, by the way,\u201d the 79-year-old president said when asked whether he would rethink America\u2019s role in the alliance.<\/p>\n

King \u2018would have stood by me\u2019<\/h2>\n

Trump also took aim at Britain\u2019s response to the conflict, criticizing the country\u2019s military capabilities and saying of its fleet, \u201cYou don\u2019t even have a navy. You\u2019re too old and had aircraft carriers that didn\u2019t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

He went on to suggest that King Charles \u2013 whom he described as \u201ca friend of mine\u201d \u2013 would have approached the situation differently than Prime Minister Keir Starmer, implying the monarch may have been more supportive of the US position.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think he would have taken a very different stand [on the war in Iran] but he doesn\u2019t do that. I mean, he\u2019s a great gentleman,\u201d said Trump of the king, adding that he \u201cwould have stood by me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The comment reflects Trump\u2019s broader frustration with allies he believes have failed to support the US during the conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt should be automatic,\u201d he told The Telegraph of NATO support. \u201cWe\u2019ve been there automatically, including Ukraine. Ukraine wasn\u2019t our problem. It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren\u2019t there for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

NATO is a one-way street<\/h2>\n

Trump\u2019s remarks followed comments from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio who said there is \u201cno doubt\u201d that Washington will \u201creexamine\u201d its relationship with NATO after some member states refused to support American military operations in the conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf now we have reached a point where the NATO alliance means we can\u2019t use those bases to defend America\u2019s interests, then NATO is a one-way street,\u201d Rubio said in an interview with\u00a0FOX News<\/a>. \u201cThen NATO is simply about us having troops in Europe to defend Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026when we need them to allow us to use their military bases, their answer is no? Then why are we in NATO? You have to ask that question,\u201d Rubio said on April 1.<\/p>\n

Why NATO plays a major role in global security<\/h2>\n

NATO, formed in 1949, includes 32 countries \u2013 two founding members in North America, including Canada and the U.S. \u2013 that have agreed to cooperate on defense and security issues.<\/p>\n

Its founding principle centers on collective protection, meaning members respond together if one nation faces an external threat.<\/p>\n

The organization describes its mission as safeguarding the freedom and security of member countries and more than one billion citizens through political and military cooperation.<\/p>\n

For decades, NATO has functioned as a stabilizing force, helping coordinate defense strategies, intelligence sharing, and joint military operations.<\/p>\n

Can the United States leave NATO?<\/h2>\n

Although Trump has suggested the decision could rest with the president, current US law requires congressional approval before withdrawal from NATO \u2013 a target of the his since his first term.<\/p>\n

Legislation passed in 2023 requires \u201ctwo thirds vote of the Senate to make sure clueless presidents couldn\u2019t act on a whim,\u201d Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer shared on X of the measure that was co-sponsored by Rubio and Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, and later included in the 2024 National Defense Authorization Act.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Senate will not vote to leave NATO and abandon our allies just because Trump is upset they wouldn\u2019t go along with his reckless war of choice,\u201d Schumer\u00a0tweeted<\/a>\u00a0on April 1, before thanking Rubio for \u201csponsoring the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n
