After nine seasons, the first American Idol is done with her red swivel chair. But why is Kelly Clarkson leaving The Voice and could her drama on another show be the reason?<\/p>\n

Clarkson joined The Voice \u2014 NBC\u2019s reality TV singing competition in which celebrity coaches form teams of contestants and compete against each other\u2014 in Season 14. She remained on the series from Season 14 to Season 21. She took a break from the series in Season 22 before returning to The Voice in Season 23. Now, Clarkson is leaving The Voice again \u2014 and this time it could be for good.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Us Weekly in 2018, Clarkson explained why she joined The Voice as a coach instead of becoming a judge on American Idol, which she won the first season of in 2002. \u201cThe Voice, literally, it\u2019s almost full circle for me how I started singing,\u201d Clarkson said. \u201cI started singing opera and everything was behind screen so my whole life, starting in music for years, was literally me having to be perfect behind that screen.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarkson also confirmed that she was asked to be a judge on\u00a0American Idol<\/em>\u00a0when the series was rebooted in 2018 but declined. \u201cI\u2019m not being, like, egocentric, but I think just a lot of people reach out to me to be a part of singing things, for obvious reasons,\u201d Clarkson said. \u201cJust because I was in the first one that everybody kind of watched.\u201d She continued of why she chose\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0instead. \u201cIt literally does come back to those blind auditions that really separates everything and it means something to me because I think that\u2019s who I represent, those people in this industry. I don\u2019t fit the pop star image that people expect all the time. But I am a pop star and this is the image that I exude. That\u2019s why this show really does complement my desires for this industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

News broke that Clarkson was leaving\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0on May 15, 2023, when NBC announced the coaches for the next season, which doesn\u2019t include Clarkson. Instead, the Season 24 coaches include Reba McEntire, Gwen Stefani, John Legend and Niall Horan.<\/p>\n

In an interview with\u00a0USA Today\u00a0in October 2023, Clarkson revealed that she left\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0to have a \u201cfresh start.\u201d\u00a0\u201cI\u2019ll be real honest: I thought I was making a horrible decision,\u201d she said. \u201cI knew I needed a fresh start and couldn\u2019t be in L.A. I really wanted to be in Montana, but you can\u2019t really do a show from there quite yet. So I was like, \u2018The only other option would probably be New York.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She also explained how issues in her personal life, including her recent divorce from her ex-husband Brandon Blackstock, played a role in her decision to leave\u00a0The Voice<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cFull disclosure, I put on a smile a lot of those times because I was struggling a lot in my personal life,\u201d Clarkson said of the past four years. \u201cI\u2019ve learned a lot about what I\u2019m capable of handling, and also what you should not handle. That was me saying \u2018bye\u2019 to\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0and having this big move.\u201d She continued, \u201cI love that family, but I was like, \u2018I\u2019m struggling. News of Clarkson leaving The Voice also came after Variety reported that her daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, was moving from the Universal lot in Los Angeles, California \u2014 where The Voice also films \u2014 to 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York City, New York, so it\u2019s likely that Clarkson\u2019s exit could be because of geography.<\/p>\n

The news also came after Rolling Stone published a report on May 12, 2023, in which 11 anonymous current and former employees claimed they were \u201coverworked\u201d and \u201cunderpaid\u201d while working at The Kelly Clarkson Show.<\/p>\n

The employees also alleged that the show had a \u201ctoxic environment\u201d that was \u201ctraumatizing to their mental health.\u201d Though the staffers called Clarkson \u201cfantastic\u201d to work with, they claimed that the producers on the talk show made their lives \u201chell.\u201d The employees also alleged that they didn\u2019t find out that The Kelly Clarkson Show was moving from Los Angeles to New York until a staff-wide e-mail sent \u201ctwo minutes before\u201d Variety broke the news on the move.<\/p>\n

Clarkson responded to the allegations in a statement on her Instagram on May 13, 2023. \u201cIn my 20 years in the entertainment industry, I\u2019ve always led with my heart and what I believe to be right. I love my team at\u00a0The Kelly Clarkson Show<\/em>, and to find out that anyone is feeling unheard and or disrespected on this show is unacceptable,\u201d she wrote. \u201cI have always been and will continue to be committed to creating and maintaining a safe and healthy environment at\u00a0The Kelly Clarkson Show,<\/em>\u00a0as we prepare for a move to the east coast, I am more committed than ever to ensuring that not only our team that is moving, but also our new team in NY, is comprised of the best and kindest in the business.\u201d<\/p>\n
