Sumbul Ari was told by doctors to simply moisturize to treat her itching \u2013 but nearly a year later, it turned out to be something far more serious than anyone expected.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When it comes to our health, we often trust doctors to make the right call and provide the correct treatment. But even though medicine has advanced significantly \u2013 with technology and research better than ever \u2013 it\u2019s still important not to dismiss our own symptoms, even when we\u2019re told it\u2019s nothing serious. Something Sumbul Ar\u2019s story makes crystal clear.<\/p>\n

Sumbul Ari, 26, was experiencing severe itching and couldn\u2019t even get a full night\u2019s sleep due to how irritated her skin was. When she first went to the doctor, she was told to simply moisturize more. However, her symptoms persisted, and she returned multiple times \u2013 only to be sent home without a proper examination.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first I thought I was having a reaction to something \u2013 perfume, deodorant, washing products, shower products. I started an elimination process, but nothing helped,\u201d she told\u00a0PEOPLE.<\/a><\/p>\n

Was dismissed by doctors<\/h2>\n

Her symptoms worsened, and she soon began experiencing unsettling fluctuations in body temperature, acne, loss of appetite, low energy, and a cough \u2013 all of which left her \u201cemotionally, mentally and physically exhausted.\u201d She also noticed a lump in her neck.<\/p>\n

After going down what she described as a \u201cReddit rabbit hole,\u201d she realized what it might be.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as I read itchy skin, night sweats and fatigue, I knew I had cancer,\u201d she said to PEOPLE.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep trying until someone listens\u201d<\/h2>\n

It turned out she was right. After another doctor\u2019s visit, her self-diagnosis was confirmed: Ari had Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t care if it was cancer, I just wanted the itching to stop and wanted a full night\u2019s sleep,\u201d she told PEOPLE.<\/p>\n

She continued: \u201cBeing told I had cancer was relieving. I finally had an answer.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I was very frustrated at all the doctors who dismissed me, and very, very angry.\u201d<\/p>\n

She is currently undergoing chemotherapy and is urging others to listen to their bodies if they feel something is wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cNever stop advocating for yourself when you know something is deeply wrong,\u201d she said. \u201cKeep trying until someone listens.<\/p>\n
