Sandra \u201cDr. Pimple Popper\u201d Lee shared a key symptom she overlooked before suffering a stroke.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even when we hear about warning signs \u2013 indicators that something might be wrong \u2013 and feel well-informed about the\u00a0symptoms of a stroke<\/a>, it\u2019s easy to overlook or downplay them when it actually happens. But recognizing those signs can make the difference between life and death in a medical emergency.<\/p>\n

Sandra Lee, better known as Dr. Pimple Popper,\u00a0<\/a>suffered\u00a0a stroke\u00a0<\/a>last November and told\u00a0PEOPLE<\/a>\u00a0how it began while she was filming her popular TLC series.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt happened while I was filming the show,\u201d she said. \u201cI had what I thought was a hot flash. I got super sweaty and didn\u2019t feel like myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Symptoms of a stroke<\/h2>\n

She was eventually rushed to the hospital, but it wasn\u2019t until hours later that she realized she had overlooked key warning signs the day before. She initially dismissed her hot flashes as a side effect of being overworked or anxiety, but her condition escalated quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cI just felt very restless,\u201d she said of that evening. \u201cIn one leg I kept feeling shooting pains.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also had trouble sleeping, and when she got up to grab something to eat, she struggled to walk down the stairs. By the next morning, it became clear something was seriously wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would hold my hand out, and it would just slowly collapse. I noticed that I had a tough time articulating and just enunciating. I thought, \u2018Am I having a stroke?’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI had a part of my brain that died\u201d<\/h2>\n

At the hospital, doctors confirmed that she had, in fact, suffered a stroke.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just a shock,\u201d said Lee. \u201cAs a physician I couldn\u2019t deny that I had slurred speech, that I was having weakness on one side, but I was like, \u2018Well, this is a dream, right?\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat essentially happened,\u201d she added, \u201cis I had a part of my brain that died.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thankfully, her recovery has gone well: \u201cI\u2019m pretty much back to normal\u2026 It really makes you realize how precious life is.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
