Credit \/ Shutterstock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Adults are swapping stress balls for baby pacifiers, and dentists say the bizarre fad could wreck your smile.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A self-soothing trend that took off in China is now gaining traction in the US, with grown-ups sucking on oversized pacifiers marketed as sleep aids and anxiety relievers.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-3645b711569c72fc4cc86948a9241444\" class=\"newsner-3645b711569c72fc4cc86948a9241444 newsner-bluebillywig_instream\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a reason we don\u2019t drink from bottles or suck on pacifiers as adults,\u201d orthodontist Dr. Ben Winters, creator of the oral care brand Something Nice, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/13\/health\/adult-pacifier-trend-can-wreak-havoc-on-mouth-dentist-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">The New York Post<\/a>. \u201cIt wreaks havoc on swallow and bite patterns.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the warnings, demand is booming. Sellers report moving thousands of adult pacifiers each month, with prices ranging anywhere from $1.40 to $70, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/people-culture\/trending-china\/article\/3320266\/adult-pacifiers-trending-china-stress-relief-and-sleep-doctors-warn-health-risks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">South China Morning Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-588a5f4418d4211d7e01463208e49dbc\" class=\"newsner-588a5f4418d4211d7e01463208e49dbc newsner-incide_content_once\"><\/div>\n<p>For some buyers, the appeal is psychological. \u201cWhen I\u2019m under pressure at work, I suck on the dummy,\u201d one user said. \u201cI feel indulged in a sense of safety from childhood.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others claim the habit helps ease ADHD symptoms, supports weight loss, or even curbs smoking cravings. \u201cIt gives me comfort and makes me less fidgety during my smoke cessation periods,\u201d another buyer explained.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-175189 entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/09\/01134312\/Screenshot-2025-09-01-at-14.43.02.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"536\" height=\"866\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/cdn-main.newsner.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2025\/09\/01134312\/Screenshot-2025-09-01-at-14.43.02.png\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Credit: @thebentist \/ TikTok.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But dentists say the calming effect comes at a high cost.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h-dental-fallout\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dental fallout<\/h3>\n<p>Constant pacifier use in adulthood can lead to an open bite; a misalignment where the upper and lower front teeth no longer touch when the jaw closes.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-693948393\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-ff90188588b374e23cc2ef47e21d1ccc\" class=\"newsner-ff90188588b374e23cc2ef47e21d1ccc newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe pressure from sucking pushes the upper teeth forward or the lowers inward,\u201d Winters explained. \u201cFor kids, the bite can often correct itself as they grow. Adults don\u2019t have that luxury.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fixing the problem often requires braces, and prolonged use can also trigger a tongue thrust pattern; a baby reflex where the tongue presses against or between the teeth while swallowing. Chewing gum, fidget toys, and stress balls can provide sensory relief, while psychologists encourage people to address the root causes of stress instead of masking them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead of relying on pacifiers, adults should focus on confronting the deeper issues for lasting mental well-being,\u201d said Dr. Hamilton Gaiani, chief medical officer at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.firepithealth.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FirePit Health<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exercise, hobbies, meditation, and deep breathing can all help manage stress naturally. Regular dental checkups, adds Allen Zhang, CEO of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prodentshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ProDENT<\/a>, are also key: \u201cPacifiers might help for a little while, but using them too much can cause problems.
