The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/Grammy-Award\">Grammy Award<\/a>-winning artist rose to prominence with her distinctively husky voice and songs that mix 1970s disco, \u201980s pop, and \u201990s club music.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Early life and career<\/p>\n<p>Dua Lipa was born in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/London\">London<\/a>\u00a0to parents Anesa and Dukagjin Lipa, who had fled\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Kosovo\">Kosovo<\/a>\u00a0in 1992 at the start of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/event\/Bosnian-War\">Bosnian War<\/a>. Dua Lipa is the eldest of their children; she has a younger sister, Rina, and a younger brother, Gjin. The family returned to Kosovo when Lipa was 11 years old, but she moved back to London on her own at age 15. The singles \u201cLevitating\u201d and \u201cDon\u2019t Start Now\u201d broke onto the U.S. charts, both peaking at number two on the\u00a0Billboard\u00a0Hot 100. In 2021 the album took home the Grammy for best pop vocal album and the BRIT Award for British album of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Lipa planned to tour in 2020 to promote\u00a0Future Nostalgia, but she postponed her concerts due to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/COVID-19\">COVID-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic. Instead she offered a live-streamed concert she called Studio 2054. The single reached number one on\u00a0Billboard\u2019s adult contemporary radio airplay chart.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Other projects: Sunny Hill music festival, Service95, and\u00a0Barbie<\/p>\n<p>After the success of her first album, Lipa returned to Kosovo in 2018 and cofounded the Sunny Hill\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/art\/music-festival\">music festival<\/a>\u00a0with her father. Lipa, Action Bronson, and Martin Garrix headlined the inaugural event, and local musicians, including her father\u2019s band, ODA, performed. Lipa planned for the festival to become an annual event, and in 2019 it featured sets by Miley Cyrus and Calvin Harris. After being canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival returned in 2022 in both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Pristina\">Pristina<\/a>, Kosovo, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Tirana\">Tirana<\/a>, Albania.
