The daughter of 80-year-old Suzanne Rees has shared the final message her mother sent just hours before she died \u2014 words that now feel especially heartbreaking in hindsight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Coral Adventurer, operated by Coral Expeditions, departed Cairns in Far North Queensland on October 24, 2025, for a planned 60-day journey around Australia.<\/p>\n

Among those on board was 80-year-old Suzanne Rees, whose dream trip would soon\u00a0end in tragedy.<\/a><\/p>\n

Early in the journey, passengers stopped at Lizard Island, in the Great Barrier Reef, for an organized hike. That morning, everything seemed perfectly normal.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe sent me a text that morning with a photo of the deck, saying: \u2018Arrived at Lizard Island, going for a hike, and then afternoon swim,\u2019\u201d her daughter Katherine recalled in a new interview with 60 Minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had no reason to think that this wouldn\u2019t be the most amazing experience. We had no reason to think anything bad would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dThe most horrible ways to die\u201d<\/h2>\n

But during the hike, Rees reportedly became unwell. According to her family, she was told to make her way back down alone. She never returned to the ship.<\/p>\n

It later emerged that the vessel left the island without realizing Suzanne was missing. A headcount wasn\u2019t carried out until hours later, and by the time the alarm was raised and the ship turned back, it was already too late.<\/p>\n

Concern only grew when Rees failed to show up for dinner aboard the Coral Adventurer, prompting a search of the ship. At first, crew members feared she may have gone overboard. Then, a search and rescue operation began, and the\u00a0Coral Adventurer\u00a0turned back towards Lizard Island.<\/p>\n

Suzanne\u2019s body was found the following day.<\/p>\n

Katherine has since accused the cruise operator of serious failures, describing what happened as a breakdown in basic care.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the little we have been told, it seems that there was a failure of care and common sense,\u201d she said. \u201cWe understand\u2026 Mum fell ill on the hill climb. She was asked to head down, unescorted.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen the ship left, apparently without doing a passenger count\u2026 Mum died, alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201dIt would be one of the most horrible ways to die. And that does haunt me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Paid $30,000 for the trip<\/h2>\n

Suzanne reportedly paid around $30,000 for a luxury cruise around Australia, a journey intended to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.<\/p>\n

Instead, it ended in tragedy for the 80-year-old Sydney gardener, leaving her family devastated and insisting the outcome should never have happened.<\/p>\n

An experienced bushwalking club member and former accountant, she had undergone a medical check-up before the trip and was given a clean bill of health.<\/p>\n

Her daughter Kate said the situation should have been handled differently from the start.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mum was capable. She walked all the time. And I think what should have happened if it was the conditions were unacceptable, the walk should have been cancelled in the first place,\u201d Kate said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody needed to make that decision and say, \u2018too hot, we\u2019re not doing a walk.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In a statement, the cruise company said it was \u201cdeeply sorry\u201d and acknowledged that some safety procedures \u201cwere not adequately implemented\u201d on the day of her death.<\/p>\n
