Rock legend Dave Mason, the English guitarist, singer-songwriter, and co-founder of Traffic, has died at 79.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s leaving behind a legacy that helped shape the sound of classic rock.<\/p>\n
A spokesperson for his family confirmed Mason passed away peacefully on April 19 at his home in Gardnerville, Nevada.<\/p>\n
\u201cOn behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dave Mason,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee, celebrated songwriter, musician, singer, and author passed away peacefully\u2026 Dave Mason lived a remarkable life devoted to the music and the people he loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nAccording to a message shared on his official Instagram, Mason spent his final moments in quiet comfort.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter cooking an amazing dinner with his beloved wife Winifred, he sat down to take a nap with sweet Star (the Maltese) at his feet,\u201d the post said. \u201cHe passed away peacefully, in his favorite chair\u2026 A storybook ending. On his own terms.\u201d<\/p>\n
Born in Worcester, England, Mason rose to fame in the late 1960s as a founding member of Traffic, alongside Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi, and Chris Wood. The band quickly became known for its innovative fusion of rock, blues, and psychedelia.<\/p>\n
Mason penned some of Traffic\u2019s most enduring songs, including \u201cFeelin\u2019 Alright?\u201d \u2014 later immortalized by Joe Cocker \u2014 and their UK hit \u201cHole in My Shoe.\u201d Though he left the band early on, he returned for later reunions and remained an essential part of its legacy.<\/p>\n

\nBeyond Traffic, Mason built an extraordinary career collaborating with some of the biggest names in music, including Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones, George Harrison, and Eric Clapton. He also found solo success with tracks like \u201cWe Just Disagree\u201d and \u201cOnly You Know and I Know.\u201d<\/p>\n
In 2004, Mason was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Traffic \u2014 a fitting recognition for a career defined more by musicianship than fame.<\/p>\n
\u201cI still don\u2019t like standing up there in front of the spotlight,\u201d Mason once said in a 2020 interview. \u201cI feel very uncomfortable up there. I\u2019m not a rock star\u2026 I just wanted to write great music, make some money and have fun.\u201d<\/p>\n
In recent years, Mason had stepped back from touring due to serious health issues, including a heart condition and a severe infection. He officially retired from the road in 2025.<\/p>\n
Fans across the world have responded with an outpouring of grief and gratitude.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019ll be present in every one of your songs,\u201d one wrote. \u201cThank you for being one of those who made this world a more beautiful place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another added: \u201cHe was a GOAT \u2014 amazing songwriter, guitarist and performer. He will be sorely missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mason is survived by his wife, Winifred, his daughter Danielle, and extended family.<\/p>\n
