He further claimed to have drunk a glass of water from the pool every day without ill effects,\u201d according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/kclpure.kcl.ac.uk\/ws\/portalfiles\/portal\/165295114\/IOP_Stories_from_Physics_8._Quantum_Nuclear_and_Particle.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Physics 8: Quantum, Nuclear and Particle Physics<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy contrast, since the 1980s, former workers have been attempting to gain compensation for symptoms caused by alleged exposure to radiation due to lax safety measures at the plant,\u201d the booklet explained.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-unless-you-ve-been-burned\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Unless you\u2019ve been burned\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>He also challenged major\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/science\/\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/science\/\" type=\"link\">nuclear<\/a>\u00a0incidents. While speaking publicly, he suggested that the 1979 crisis at Pennsylvania\u2019s Three Mile Island had been exaggerated, despite historical reporting.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a id=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/films\/three\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/films\/three\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" type=\"link\">PBS<\/a>, a senior engineer said there was \u201ca meltdown at Three Mile Island,\u201d which released radioactive gas over several days.<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-173013197\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-f0772278243d65cd1084e086b0951740\" class=\"newsner-f0772278243d65cd1084e086b0951740 newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cUnless you\u2019ve been burned, you haven\u2019t got a problem,\u201d Winsor said in a 1985 interview with The Herald.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-eats-uranium\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eats uranium<\/h2>\n<p>The moment most closely associated with Winsor unfolds during a lecture, where he set out to prove his point in a way that left no room for doubt.<\/p>\n<p>Standing in front of an audience, the chemist lifted a small container he claimed held uranium oxide and brought a Geiger counter \u2013 used to measure radioactivity \u2013 close enough for everyone to hear it react. The steady clicking filled the room, confirming the presence of radiation, but instead of backing away, he leaned into it.<\/p>\n<p>Without breaking his rhythm, he tipped a small amount into his\u00a0<a id=\"2420\" href=\"https:\/\/en.newsner.com\/tag\/health\/\" type=\"post_tag\">palm<\/a>, paused just long enough for the sound of the detector to register, and then, in a move that still catches viewers off guard, placed the substance in his mouth and swallowed.<\/p>\n<p>He then licked the leftovers from his hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019ve just done makes me high-level nuclear waste,\u201d he said, according to the Herald. \u201cAccording to federal regulations, they will have to bury me 3,000 feet in Carlsbad, N.M.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"entered lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1300594284342669%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"476\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-rocket-lazyload=\"fitvidscompatible\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F1300594284342669%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" data-ll-status=\"loaded\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>He claimed this was not a one-time act and said he repeated similar demonstrations during his tours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just another form of sun-tan,\u201d said Winsor of licking the yellow powder, according to the Oregonian. \u201cI do this in front of audiences, and they go wild.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"newsner-812068151\" class=\"newsner-article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"newsner-2cc38dc86ad0a814804f3f112788383c\" class=\"newsner-2cc38dc86ad0a814804f3f112788383c newsner-amp_article_inside_content\"><\/div>\n<h2 id=\"h-experts-question-claims\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experts question claims<\/h2>\n<p>Although the footage has been verified as real, key details remain unclear, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snopes.com\/fact-check\/scientist-ate-radioactive-uranium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Snopes<\/a>\u00a0explaining it could not confirm whether the \u201csubstance Winsor consumed in the in-question video was uranium.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That uncertainty matters, especially as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/science.howstuffworks.com\/science-vs-myth\/what-if\/what-if-ate-uranium.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">HowStuffWorks<\/a>\u00a0reports that even small amounts of uranium \u2013 typically used to fuel nuclear power plants \u2013 can damage the kidneys, while larger amounts may be fatal.<\/p>\n<p>Winsor went on to live into his eighties, dying in 2008 at the age of 82, with his obituary offering no cause of death.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you make of Winsor\u2019s claims \u2013 bold experiment or dangerous misinformation?
