From Idol champion to Idol mentor\u2014Carrie Underwood says she\u2019ll never forget where it all began. Carrie Underwood may be one of the most successful artists to ever emerge from American Idol, but she hasn\u2019t let fame cloud her memory of those early, nerve-wracking days. And that\u2019s exactly why she says she takes her judging role on the show so seriously. \u201cI\u2019ve been that girl standing in front of the judges, heart pounding, praying someone believes in me,\u201d Carrie shared in a recent backstage interview. \u201cThat moment changes lives\u2014and I never take it lightly.<\/span><\/p>\n

Carrie Underwood has the unique experience of being both a former \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d winner and a new judge, so she understands the process on both sides of the action. Underwood says she feels a great responsibility to take her role as a judge seriously for one big reason.<\/p>\n

In an April 2025 interview with Billboard, Underwood was asked how she felt about \u201cgoing from contestant to judge.\u201d She called the new judging gig \u201cdifficult.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just so happy to be here. It\u2019s definitely different, but it\u2019s difficult,\u201d she said. \u201cI mean, when we\u2019re discussing contestants, \u2018Are they going to make the top 24?\u2019 It\u2019s a show, but it\u2019s people\u2019s lives and I\u2019m like, \u2018I was on these [contestant] boards 20 years ago and they were moving my picture around trying to see what board I was going to fit into,\u2019 so I take it really seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n
