The 50th Annual Country Music Association Awards proved to be both a celebration of the past twelve months in country music, but also a fond look back at the history of the genre, with a diverse mix of today\u2019s stars, the all-time legends, and yes,\u00a0Beyonce<\/strong>, in a guest role. In fact, the show was so packed with talent that it went 20 minutes over \u2014 a rarity for the ABC broadcast.<\/p>\n

The evening ended with a return to the top by entertainer of the year\u00a0Garth Brooks<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0who won the prize four times in the 1990s. \u201cI want to thank the CMAs. This is very, very sweet,\u201d Brooks said. \u201cWe are so damned lucky to be part of this thing called country music,\u201d tipping his hat to the audience. His win in the category extended his record in the category to five wins \u2014 1991, 1992, 1997, 1998\u00a0and now 2016.<\/p>\n

It was also a big night for\u00a0Carrie Underwood<\/strong>, who walked away the female vocalist of the year award, breaking a six-year winning streak by\u00a0Miranda Lambert.<\/strong>\u00a0Underwood won her first female vocalist in eight years \u2014\u00a0and fourth overall.<\/p>\n

The show started with a montage of some of the most historic moments in\u00a0CMA Awards\u00a0past, ranging from\u00a0Minnie Pearl\u00a0<\/strong>to\u00a0Garth Brooks<\/strong>\u00a0to\u00a0Dolly Parton\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Taylor Swift<\/strong>, before segueing into a salute to many of the artists who made country history.\u00a0Vince Gill<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ben Haggard<\/strong>, son of the late\u00a0Merle<\/strong>, paid tribute to the late singer\u00a0with a performance of \u201cMama Tried,\u201d a No. 1\u00a0Billboard hit from 1968.<\/p>\n

Brad Paisley\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Roy Clark<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014\u00a0the 1973 entertainer of the year winner \u2014\u00a0delivered a tribute to Clark\u2019s \u201cHee Haw\u201d co-host\u00a0Buck Owens<\/strong>, while Paisley\u2019s co-host, Carrie Underwood, paid homage to\u00a0Tammy Wynette\u00a0<\/strong>with a soaring delivery on \u201cStand By Your Man.\u201d<\/p>\n

Charley Pride<\/strong>, the big winner from the 1971 show, took viewers back in time with \u201cKiss An Angel Good Morning,\u201d and\u00a0Alabama\u00a0<\/strong>\u2014 the first three-time entertainer of the year winners from 1982-84, delivered a rousing take on \u201cMountain Music.\u201d Both Pride and Alabama are members of the Country Music Hall of Fame, and they were joined on stage by new inductee\u00a0Charlie Daniels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Reba McEntire\u00a0\u2014<\/strong>\u00a0one of only a handful of female vocalists to be named as entertainer of the year (1986)\u00a0\u2014 brought the crowd to life with a portion of her hit \u201cFancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other performers in the opening sequence included\u00a0Dwight Yoakam, Clint Black, Alan Jackson,<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ricky Skaggs<\/strong>, who showed his guitar prowess to be much the same that it was in 1985, when he was named entertainer of the year. The opening slot ended with Underwood and Paisley leading the crowd with\u00a0Randy Travis\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cForever and Ever, Amen.\u201d Travis was on stage, and delivered the final note of the 1987 single of the year.<\/p>\n
