The couple\u2019s almost two-decade-long \u2013 and seemingly loving \u2013 marriage stood out as an anomaly among the Hollywood elite.<\/p>\n

While the news has shocked fans around the world, the couple had issues just months into their marriage thanks to Keith\u2019s arduous battle with drug and\u00a0alcohol<\/span>addiction.<\/p>\n

Four months after tying the knot in 2006, his addiction reared its head and the\u00a0 country music star went into rehab.<\/p>\n

Keith told Rolling Stone he started doing cocaine in the early 1990s<\/p>\n

\u2018We got married in 2006, and barely four months into our marriage, the addictions that I had done really nothing about blew our marriage to smithereens,\u2019 he told the crowd.<\/p>\n

He also admitted to battling addiction at the time he met Nicole and, with her support, he eventually managed to pull through.<\/p>\n

\u2018Four months into a marriage, and I\u2019m in rehab for three months with no idea what was going to happen to us.<\/p>\n

\u2018Nic pushed through every negative voice \u2013 I\u2019m sure even some of her own \u2013 and she chose love.<\/p>\n

\u2018And here we are tonight 18 years later. Her capacity to love is like no one I\u2019ve ever met.\u2019<\/p>\n

Upon listening to her husband\u2019s emotional speech, Nicole was visibly emotional in the audience, wiping away a tear as she listened to his heartfelt words.<\/p>\n

Keith checked himself into the Betty Ford Centre\u00a0at Rancho Mirage, California in October 2006, following a boozy bender while on tour.<\/p>\n

The three-month stint was at the behest of Nicole, who staged an intervention to get her husband help.<\/p>\n

Keith recalled the moment his wife staged the intervention in the book Keith Urban by Jeff Apter.<\/p>\n

He told Rolling Stone back in 2016 that he would have understood if Nicole chose to leave him after his 2006 rehab stint, given the couple had only married that year.<\/p>\n

\u2018I was very, very blessed to have Nic call an intervention on me,\u2019 Keith said, adding that his reckless behaviour \u2019caused the implosion of my fresh marriage\u2019.<\/p>\n

He also reflected on the intervention with Oprah Winfrey, admitting to the famed talk show host that he \u2018went off the rails\u2019 and \u2018needed help and a new direction\u2019 in his life.<\/p>\n

Nicole, who was working in Rome at the time of his bender, flew back to the States and rounded up his friends to stage an intervention.<\/p>\n

\u2018The love in that room in that moment was just right,\u2019 Keith told Oprah. \u2018To see love in action in that way\u2026 I\u2019d never experienced anything like that before.\u2019<\/p>\n

While speaking of Nicole\u2019s decision to stay with him during his third stint in rehab in eight years, Keith said that, at that point, \u2018she really should\u2019ve just walked.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019m just so glad she didn\u2019t, and she made a decision to turn around and initiate ultimately this intervention,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Vernon, who spent \u201914 years homeless and addicted to crack\u2019 after the group broke up, alleges they spent \u2018over a quarter of a million dollars on cocaine\u2019 recording the trio\u2019s self-titled 1997 album.<\/p>\n

\u2018We lived in the studio. We did a lot of coke, and stayed up for days,\u2019 he explains in the book.<\/p>\n

\u2018Of the million [US] dollars spent on the recording of it\u2026 a fair guess would estimate at least 25 percent of that money went to Clinton\u2019s \u201cwar on drugs\u201d foot soldiers,\u2019 he describes.<\/p>\n

In a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone, Keith reflected on the moment he was offered a \u2018massive pipe\u2019 by his roommate to try cocaine for the first time in Nashville.<\/p>\n

\u2018I\u2019d never had it, it looked good, so I took it. Things didn\u2019t immediately go pear-shaped, but that was the beginning of it,\u2019 he stated.<\/p>\n

He revealed it was a break-up with a former girlfriend that sent him spiralling.<\/p>\n

\u2018After that, s**t started to really go awry. I stepped up my drinking. I started doing more drugs. The whole back end of the Nineties were just awful,\u2019 he explained.<\/p>\n

Keith previously revealed that having grown up watching his father\u2019s heavy drinking, it took him \u2018a long time to get sober\u2019 because he didn\u2019t \u2018recognise\u2019 his own alcoholism.<\/p>\n

It emerged this week that Keith may pocket more than $17million following his shock separation from Nicole \u2013 thanks to a prenuptial clause tied to his sobriety<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He also admitted he \u2018sucked at relationships\u2019 prior to meeting Nicole, and that his song lyrics about love were far from his reality.<\/p>\n

\u2018I would write these songs about love and relationships; I remember writing Somebody Like You and playing it for my girlfriend at the time and she just looked at me and said, \u201cYou\u2019re a f**king hypocrite,\u201d and I couldn\u2019t argue that,\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, it emerged this week that Keith may pocket more than $17million following his separation from Nicole, thanks to a prenuptial clause tied to his sobriety.<\/p>\n

The New Zealand-born singer reportedly signed an agreement with the actress before their 2006 wedding, which awards him $900,000 for every year of marriage, according to Radar Online.<\/p>\n
