Diane Keaton\u2019s longtime friend is recalling her last moments with the late star.<\/p>\n

In an emotional interview with PEOPLE, Grammy and Oscar-winning songwriter Carole Bayer Sager recounts her final visit with the Oscar winner, who\u00a0died\u00a0at age 79 in California on Saturday, Oct. 11, and recalls being surprised by her appearance.<\/p>\n

\u201cI saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,\u201d Sager says. \u201cShe had lost so much weight.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sager, who co-wrote Keaton\u2019s only solo single,\u00a0\u201cFirst Christmas,\u201d\u00a0explains that she\u2019d seen her friend less this year because Keaton spent months in Palm Springs after the\u00a0wildfires in California\u00a0in January.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe had to go to Palm Springs because her house had been damaged inside, and they had to clean everything,\u201d says Sager. \u201cShe was down there for a while, and when she came back, I was kind of stunned by how much weight she\u2019d lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

Still, \u201cshe was a magic light for everyone,\u201d Sager adds. \u201cI just loved her. She was so special, she just lit up a room with her energy. She was happy and upbeat and taking photographs of everything she saw. She was completely creative; she never stopped creating.\u201d<\/p>\n

That creativity included working together on\u00a0\u201cFirst Christmas,\u201d\u00a0which was released in November 2024, alongside co-writer and producer Jonas Myrin.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe so loved recording this song,\u201d Sager recalls. \u201cShe was almost childlike about it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sager adds, \u201cShe was so authentic when she sang it, I mean, she just sang it like she was singing it, and she was sort of acting it, you know, because she is a great actress. And then she\u2019d start to cry when she was singing it. But she did such a beautiful job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sager says she also always admired Keaton\u2019s style. Recalling how the late actress never wasted an opportunity to show off a cool outfit at their get-togethers, she says of Keaton, \u201cShe went to the movies always dressed like she was about to shoot another scene for\u00a0Annie Hall<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019d wear her hats and her jackets and her baggy pants, and her belts,\u201d continues Sager. \u201cShe was a fashion icon of her own making.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star,\u201d Midler wrote. \u201cWhat you saw was who she was\u2026oh, la, lala!\u201d<\/p>\n

Another friend shared similar sentiments with PEOPLE about Keaton\u2019s: \u201cShe was funny right up until the end,\u201d the pal said. \u201cShe lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved.\u201d<\/p>\n
