Then, Lily Cornell, the late Chris Cornell’s eldest daughter, stepped onto the stage, her trembling hands clutching a piece of paper. It had been nearly eight years since her father’s voice — that unmistakable growl that defined a generation — last echoed across a stage. But tonight, it was his legacy that filled the room. Soundgarden, the Seattle band that reshaped rock music, was finally being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Comic actor Jim Carrey opened the tribute with warmth and humor, calling Chris “the kind of singer who could set your soul on fire and then soothe the burn with a whisper.” But when Lily walked to the microphone, everything changed. Her voice — soft, steady, and full of ache — carried farther than any scream. “My dad taught me that music wasn’t just sound — it was truth,” she said, pausing as her eyes glistened. “He believed pain could turn into beauty, and that’s what he left behind for all of us.” The audience held its breath. This evening especially, I could not be prouder to be their daughter.”

She continued, “The band’s impact is of course massive, but growing up within the Seattle music community, what’s always been the most special part to me is that it comes from friends making music together, and then being able to turn that into a life. Seeing my dad not as a public figure, but as a person, a father, and someone who faced his struggles out loud, I am just really, really happy that he got to make music with his friends. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. I know how much purpose that gave him, and how much it’s meant to people who have heard that music.
