Some people wait a lifetime for a moment on\u00a0The Voice<\/em>.<\/p>\n

As\u00a0Kelly Clarkson<\/strong>,\u00a0Adam Levine<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0John Legend<\/strong>\u00a0make their return as coaches on the NBC singing show\u2019s upcoming\u00a029th season, new rules are also being put in place to spice up what has been dubbed\u00a0The Voice: Battle of Champions<\/em>, premiering on Feb. 23, 2026.<\/p>\n

For the first time ever, the coaches will compete against each other in a \u201cTriple Turn Competition\u201d during the blind auditions, during which they\u2019ll attempt to score the most three-chair turns. The winning coach will earn a \u201cSuper Steal\u201d for the battles round, allowing them to veto other coaches\u2019 attempt to recruit an artist.<\/p>\n

If that wasn\u2019t enough of a change-up already, each coach will also bring back two artists from their former teams during the knockouts for head-to-head sing-offs. The coach with the most sing-off wins is guaranteed a second season 29 finalist.<\/p>\n

In addition, there\u2019ll be a new \u201cvoting block\u201d made up of past\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0artists, as well as super-fans of the show. They\u2019ll have the opportunity to join the in-studio audience and vote for their season 29 competitors in real-time during the semi-finals and finale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The change in show format comes after host\u00a0Carson Daly\u00a0<\/strong>introduced the\u00a0Carson Callback Card in the ongoing season 28. The brand-new power allowed the longtime emcee\u2014who has anchored the show since its debut in 2011\u2014to give artist\u00a0Ryan Mitchell<\/strong>\u00a0a second chance at auditioning for the coaches, with\u00a0Reba McEntire<\/strong>\u00a0ultimately recruiting him onto her team.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n

The current season also saw the debut of the Mic Drop button, allowing coaches to select one artist from their respective teams to vie for the opportunity to perform at The Rose Parade on Jan. 1.<\/p>\n

So far,\u00a0Michael Bubl\u00e9<\/strong>\u00a0used the button on his team member\u00a0Max Chambers<\/strong>, while\u00a0Niall Horan<\/strong>\u00a0recently selected trio\u00a0DEK of Hearts<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Does the winner of\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>get any money?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The winner of\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>is promised a recording contract with Universal Music Group, the monetary value of which is technically unknown.<\/p>\n

But while NBC and series producers have never confirmed any amount, the last singer standing at the end of the competition\u00a0reportedly gets $100,000.<\/p>\n

Past winners have acknowledged getting paid, season 18 champ\u00a0Todd Tilghman<\/strong>\u00a0telling\u00a0People<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>in 2020, \u201cI don\u2019t have any immediate plans\u00a0to make any drastic changes tomorrow. I don\u2019t know for sure the direction my life will go in. There\u2019s a possibility that that money might pay the bills for a little while.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, he added, since his wife had promised their kids a trip to Disney World, he guessed he\u2019d be splurging on that too.<\/p>\n

Not that the value of the music opportunities that open up for the winners should be discounted.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got a catalog of songs. I have a lot of writer friends I want to collaborate with,\u201d season 27 winner\u00a0Adam David<\/strong>\u00a0of Team Bubl\u00e9 told\u00a0Parade<\/em>\u00a0in May 2025. \u201cThe plan is to put out some music and go on to work. We\u2019re going to put out some music, and we\u2019re going to hit the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

How does an aspiring contestant get to\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u2018s Blind Auditions?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

In addition to individual recruiting (such as when producers reached out to\u00a0Frenchie Davis<\/strong>\u00a0eight years after she was on\u00a0American Idol<\/em>),\u00a0The Voice<\/em>\u00a0traditionally held in-person auditions around the U.S. Lately, however, the talent search is online, judges holding\u00a0virtual open calls\u00a0and weeding through video submissions to find singers who then\u00a0may<\/em>\u00a0get a chance to sing for the coaches in hopes that at least one of them turns around.<\/p>\n

Contestants must be at least 13 years old when they embark on their audition journey. The hopefuls have 90 seconds to introduce themselves\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>sing. They can sing anything they want but, per the\u00a0show\u2019s FAQ page, they\u2019re encouraged to pick a tune \u201cthat best suits your voice and represents you as an artist.\u201d<\/p>\n

Judges listen to auditions for \u201cfive or six days with approximately 18 to 20 auditions per day,\u201d executive producer\u00a0Audrey Morrissey<\/strong>\u00a0told\u00a0SheKnows in 2018.\u00a0<\/strong>Once they\u2019re selected for the blind round, she explained, \u201cArtists are with us for several days prior to [their audition] to rehearse with our band, work with wardrobe\/styling and camera block on the audition stage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the filming to put together the packages introducing some of the hopefuls and their families, all of which came as a surprise to season six alum\u00a0Ddendyl Hoyt<\/strong>. \u201cI had no idea that reality TV was filmed kind of like a drama,\u201d she told the\u00a0Washington Post\u00a0<\/em>in 2014, \u201cSo everything is filmed in segments and that\u2019s kind of the longest process of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

If at first you don\u2019t make it out of the untelevised rounds\u2014or onto a team if you\u00a0do<\/em>\u00a0make it to the blind auditions\u2014you\u2019re free to try out as many times as you want, albeit only once per season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t be a mean judge,\u201d coach\u00a0Reba McEntire<\/strong>, who won season 25 with\u00a0Asher HaVon<\/strong>, told\u00a0Newsweek\u00a0<\/em>in 2023. \u201cIt\u2019s good just to say, \u2018If you want to come back again, try it again next season, maybe a song that suits you, one that you\u2019re really comfortable with and that really shows your talent,\u2019 give them advice and encourage them to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show has a massive wardrobe department that ensures the contestants take the stage in elevated fashion\u2014once they\u2019ve made it onto a team.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe shop for each artist to come up with great looks,\u201d Morrissey told SheKnows. \u201cOnce we get to the live shows, looks are customized for each specific performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The celebrity coaches might not be pulling all-nighters, but they\u2019re invested in getting their teams ready for the battle rounds and beyond.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe coaching sessions take place over four days,\u201d Morrissey said, \u201cand the actual battle performances take two days.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, she added, how involved a coach gets with each artist \u201cdepends on the coach. Some love a big production and like working out all the details\u2026Other coaches mainly focus on the music and arrangement for the performance.\u201d<\/p>\n

Some coaches \u201care avid texters while others email,\u201d Morrissey added. \u201cAll off-camera interactions intensify as the artists move through the competition and the stakes get higher.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it takes a village, former contestant Hoyt telling the\u00a0Post<\/em>, \u201cWhat they don\u2019t show is all the coaching that comes from the staff: The vocal coaches, the band director, the producers, everyone has notes for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Snoop Dogg<\/strong>\u00a0told\u00a0Access Hollywood<\/em>\u00a0in September 2025, \u201cThe behind-the-scenes people don\u2019t get the credit that they deserve. It\u2019s a lot of people, moving things, making it happen\u2026All of these people back here that make our job easy, all we gotta do is walk onstage and do what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Who picks the songs the contestants sing on\u00a0The Voice<\/em>?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Between coaches and artists, Morrissey said, \u201cThe No. 1 communication is about song choice.\u201d<\/p>\n

The artists can theoretically offer their two cents when it comes to picking their songs, but usually the coaches rule on that front.<\/p>\n

Season one\u2019s Frenchie\u2014who competed under O.G. coach\u00a0Christina Aguilera<\/strong>\u2018s tutelage\u2014told\u00a0Cosmopolitan\u00a0<\/em>in 2021\u00a0it was \u201calways hysterical when the judges say, \u2018I don\u2019t think that was a good song choice for you,\u2019 and I\u2019m thinking, you picked that song.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the flip side, season 24 winner\u00a0Huntley\u00a0<\/strong>credited coach\u00a0Niall Horan\u00a0<\/strong>with helping him find his way, telling\u00a0NBC Insider\u00a0the One Direction alum \u201cknows how to pick songs, I\u2019ll tell you that.\u201d<\/p>\n

What sort of resources are available to help\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>artists tend to their mental health?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Aspiring contestants are screened beforehand to see if they seem emotionally ready for the pressure that lies ahead, and then the show employs mental health professionals to help the artists both during and at the end of their journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had to start visiting to check on our well-being,\u201d season six alum\u00a0Kat Perkins<\/strong>\u00a0told\u00a0Cosmopolitan<\/em>\u00a0of the counselors on staff. \u201cThe minute you are eliminated, you walk from that stage and into the psychiatrist\u2019s office for a debriefing. They make sure that you talk about it. It\u2019s very needed because you\u2019ll never go through anything like it again. It\u2019s traumatic and you\u2019re not really emotionally set up to do something that big that quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

How do the chairs on\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>really work?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The coaches are masters of their own domains, the big red chairs evolving over the years but always boasting the ability to turn around at the push of a button. In 2018 they received a sleek upgrade, including the addition of\u00a0three more buttons\u2014giving each coach the chance to block a fellow coach, once per round, from getting a chance at claiming the contestant behind the voice.<\/p>\n

Not unlike a luxury car seat, in addition to an automobile-caliber aluminum frame and shiny paint job, each chair has self-adjusting heaters (\u201cMe and Reba, we\u2019re the butt-warming kings,\u201d Snoop quipped to\u00a0Access Hollywood<\/em>) and dual cupholders (as requested by former coach\u00a0Blake Shelton<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

But, according to Perkins, the dramatic\u00a0whoosh<\/em>\u00a0sound the chairs make when they turn around is added in post-production.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou almost don\u2019t notice it,\u201d she told\u00a0Cosmo<\/em>, \u201cespecially when you\u2019re focusing and singing to the crowd that\u2019s in the studio.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Do the coaches on\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>get along?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

While\u00a0congenial ribbing between coaches\u00a0is part of the show\u2019s DNA, it was unclear at times over the course of the 16 seasons they were on\u00a0The Voice\u00a0<\/em>together if Blake and\u00a0Adam Levine<\/strong>\u00a0were as exasperated with each other as they seemed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are constantly at each other\u2019s throats, and sometimes we really do get mad at each other,\u201d Blake told\u00a0The Tennessean\u00a0<\/em>in 2017. \u201cWe\u2019re those two guys you knew in high school where we have this bond that is unexplainable. It brings out the best and worst in both of us. It truly is an explosive relationship. And I know every trick to get under his skin.\u201d<\/p>\n

Translation: \u201cHe\u2019s one of the best friends that I have, but I still want to kill him sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n

And even though they haven\u2019t competed against each other since 2019, Adam knows what the fans want.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Voice season 1 after party, at my house with dips\u2013t @blakeshelton,\u201d the O.G. coach captioned a throwback pic ahead of his return to the show in February 2025 for season 27.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the latest crop of coaches are far less likely to\u00a0tweet out each other\u2019s private phone numbers.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou spend so much time together,\u201d Niall said during an\u00a0NBC sit-down, \u201cand I was hoping it wasn\u2019t going to be like this TV relationship where the cameras go around and we\u2019re like [feigning enthusiasm], \u2018Hey<\/em>, Snoop Dogg!\u2019 I was always nervous about that, doing the show in the first place.
