Witnesses say Gill\u2019s tribute performance wasn\u2019t just a salute \u2014 it felt like a love letter to Strait\u2019s legacy. Mid-song, Gill reportedly paused, smiled, and said quietly:  \u201cGeorge, you didn\u2019t just change country music \u2014 you changed all of us.\u201d  The room fell silent, Strait\u2019s family wiped away tears, and Gill ended the performance with a soft bow rather than applause-seeking flourish.  Now, with the broadcast set to air soon, fans are buzzing with questions: Will Strait respond publicly? Will there be a surprise duet? And did the cameras capture the emotional handshake the two legends shared backstage?  One thing is certain \u2014 this isn\u2019t just an awards tribute. WATCH VIDEO BELOW \ud83d\udc47\ud83d\udc47"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 id=\"h-the-48th-kennedy-center-honors-will-be-broadcast-on-dec-23\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The 48th Kennedy Center Honors Will Be Broadcast On Dec. 23<\/h2>\n<p>Typically, the president is seated with the first lady in the balcony of the Kennedy Center beside those who are being honored\u2026 However, this year\u2019s Kennedy Center Honors ceremony is a bit different.<\/p>\n<p>On Dec. 23, the nation will get to see part of what has made the 48th Kennedy Center Honors so unique, as they will see\u00a0President Donald Trump\u00a0serve as host of the evening\u2019s festivities.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-4\"><\/div>\n<p><em>\u201cI must say, this is the first time that a president of the United States has ever hosted this phenomenal event,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Trump stated.\u00a0<em>\u201cI don\u2019t know why I\u2019m doing it\u2026 I\u2019m going to try and act like Johnny Carson. How about Johnny? We miss Johnny, don\u2019t we?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Kennedy Center Honors are famously a pre-taped event, with the 2025 ceremony having taken place over the weekend, on Sunday, Dec. 7.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-5\"><\/div>\n<p>There, Trump introduced the five honorees:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Country artist\u00a0George Strait;<\/li>\n<li>Stage actor Michael Crawford;<\/li>\n<li>Film actor Sylvester Stallone;<\/li>\n<li>Disco singer Gloria Gaynor; and<\/li>\n<li>Rock band\u00a0KISS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Trump also provided some comic relief, joking, as seen in a clip released from the event, that the Kennedy Center\u2019s name was going to be changing to the\u00a0<em>\u201cTrump-Kennedy Center.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Notably, Trump is serving as chair of the Kennedy Center Board of Trustees, and his administration\u2019s Health and Human Services secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., was designated by Congress this year as an ex officio member of the board.<\/p>\n<p>Moments before the ceremony began, Trump was asked about the potential name change\u00a0on the red carpet, but he turned to First Lady Melania Trump, saying,\u00a0<em>\u201cIt\u2019s not up to me, we have a board of 40 people that are, really, the most prestigious people in the United States. We have the honorary chairwoman, our first lady.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For Trump, hosting the Kennedy Center Honors is in stark contrast to his participation with the event as well as the performing arts institution, as he was absent from each ceremony during his first term as president.<\/p>\n<p>Watch Trump\u2019s joke, and some of his other remarks from his opening monologue, here:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Trump jokes about 'Trump-Kennedy Center' in remarks during Honors ceremony\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/H1BeHnHugrU\" width=\"736\" height=\"1309\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-origwidth=\"736\" data-origheight=\"1309\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course, there were also many tribute performances and remarks made by individuals who were inspired by the honorees.<\/p>\n<p>Before the ceremony will air on CBS and Paramount+ on Dec. 23, let\u2019s take a look at what to expect from the Kennedy Center Honors, including the tribute lineup for George Strait and the tribute honoring the late KISS founding member Ace Frehley.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-george-strait-honored\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">George Strait Honored<\/h2>\n<p>While presenting the medallions to the honorees on Dec. 6 ahead of the ceremony, Trump said,\u00a0<em>\u201cWe can hardly imagine the country music phenomena without its \u2018King of Country.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That \u201cKing of Country\u201d is none other than George Strait.<\/p>\n<p>While Strait had a humorous moment receiving his medallion, which saw Trump compliment the country star\u2019s\u00a0<em>\u201cgood hair\u201d<\/em>\u00a0as he removed his signature cowboy hat to receive his medallion, all Strait had to do at the actual ceremony was sit back and relax.<\/p>\n<p>According to NPR, Vince Gill was among the country artists on hand to honor Strait, with Gill performing the Strait\u2019s song \u201cTroubadour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This was particularly timely, as Gill was honored by Strait with the\u00a0Willie Nelson Lifetime Achievement Award\u00a0at the 59th Country Music Association Awards on Nov. 19.<\/p>\n<p>Also honoring Strait were country-duo Brooks &amp; Dunn and Miranda Lambert, but it has not yet been announced which song they are performing.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-kiss-ace-frehley-remembered\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">KISS\u2019 Ace Frehley Remembered<\/h2>\n<p>The\u00a0announcement of the honorees\u00a0for the 48th Kennedy Center Honors was made on August 13, but tragedy would strike in the time between the announcement and the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>On October 16, one of the founding members of the iconic band\u00a0KISS, guitarist Ace Frehley, died at the age of 74.<\/p>\n<p>Of Frehley\u2019s death, KISS singer Paul Stanley said on the red carpet of the Kennedy Center Honors on Dec. 7,\u00a0<em>\u201cWe can mourn him, and celebrate what we accomplished.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>According to the\u00a0<em>Associated Press<\/em>, Frehley was remembered in a powerful way during the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p>At one point during the tribute to KISS, a red guitar was placed on stage that smoke began pouring out of.
