Keith Urban\u00a0is reminding everyone that he got it right when it comes to his longtime love for\u00a0Nicole Kidman.<\/p>\n

During the country crooner\u2019s emotional speech honoring his wife at the\u00a0star-studded 49th AFI Life Achievement Award Gala\u00a0on Saturday, April 27, Urban recalled why he was too \u201cnervous\u201d to make a move after they met.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was trying to play it cool, but inside I felt like I\u2019d snuck into the royal ball simply because Nic had such a truly otherworldly aura about her,\u201d said Urban, 56, remembering when he met Kidman, also 56, in January 2005 at a G\u2019Day LA event in California.<\/p>\n

\u201cI felt a bit like I was meeting a real-life princess,\u201d\u00a0Urban added. \u201cAnd despite all of that, I did manage to get her phone number on a tiny piece of paper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Urban carried her number in his pocket for a week, occasionally pulling it out to try to muster enough courage to call her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was scared. I was nervous to call her,\u201d\u00a0he continued during his speech at Hollywood\u2019s Dolby Theatre. \u201cI did, as you probably figured out, pluck up the courage to finally call her.\u201d<\/p>\n

The call went well, with the once-nervous Urban recalling how \u201cthis mystic creature\u201d\u00a0turned out to be \u201cjust a wide-eyed, giddy girl from the Sydney suburbs\u201d who is \u201cutterly Aussie through and through,\u201d even though she was born in Honolulu.<\/p>\n

The AFI tribute to Kidman, which marked the first public red carpet event for\u00a0her and Urban\u2019s teenage daughters, included other speeches from celebrity friends such as\u00a0Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Watts and Zac Efron.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone\u2019s speaking here tonight is going to talk about Nic\u2019s talent, and I could easily do that myself,\u201d Urban said. \u201cI mean, she truly is one of the greats, as Russell Crowe said, and tonight proves that I\u2019m not just a biased husband.\u201d<\/p>\n

The proud husband went on to discuss how Kidman loved him even when he went to\u00a0rehab for substance abuse\u00a0shortly after they got married.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do want to take an opportunity to talk about Nic\u2019s heart and her spirit. We got married in June, 2006 and barely four months into our marriage, my addictions that I\u2019d done really nothing about, blew our marriage to smithereens,\u201d Urban admitted. \u201cAnd I went into the Betty Ford Center for three months. Four months into a marriage I\u2019m in rehab for three months. I had no idea what was going to happen to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

The story brought Kidman to tears as she listened in the audience, alongside her\u00a0Big Little Lies\u00a0<\/em>costars \u2014\u00a0Meryl Streep\u00a0and\u00a0Witherspoon\u00a0\u2014 and\u00a0Morgan Freeman, who worked with her on\u00a0Lioness<\/em>.

\u201cIf you want to see what love in action really looks like, give that a whirl,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cNic pushed through every negative voice, I\u2019m sure even some of her own. And she chose love. And here we are tonight, 18 years later.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not long after rehab, Urban released a song about Kidman called \u201cGot It Right This Time,\u201d featuring the heartfelt lyrics, \u201cShe believes in me like I\u2019ve been trying to do, I\u2019m seeing things I\u2019ve never seen before.
