I went to a very small Baptist church in my hometown of Checotah, Oklahoma. We would file in and sit in the pews and they\u2019d say, \u2018Open your hymnals to page\u2026\u2019 or whatever. And off we went,\u201d she\u00a0told NPR.<\/p>\n<p>She continued, \u201cWhen we started out making our list [for the album], it was a very long list of songs to sing. And I knew I had my pillars: I wanted to record \u2018How Great Thou Art\u2019 and \u2018Softly and Tenderly,\u2019 because those are ones I\u2019ve been singing over the years in live situations. And \u2018Just As I Am\u2019 was another one, because that was our altar call song\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>How Underwood\u2019s audience changes in the studio versus on stage<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cWhen I\u2019m on stage, I\u2019m singing to the fans. And I\u2019m also singing for myself, you know, because it\u2019s it just feels good to sing. I\u2019m a bird, that\u2019s how God made me. But I\u2019m singing for them,\u201d she said in the same interview.<\/p>\n<p>When it comes to the recording booth, however, it\u2019s a different story: \u201cWhen I made this album, I\u2019m performing for an audience of one.
