Goldie Hawn\u00a0and\u00a0Kurt Russell\u00a0became emotional while watching\u00a0Kate Hudson\u00a0in\u00a0Song Sung Blue<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Speaking during a post-screening panel at AMC The Grove 14 in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Jan. 13, Q&A moderator Hawn, 80, revealed that she and Russell, 74, were in tears as they watched an early cut of the film.<\/p>\n

Explaining she hadn\u2019t cried at a movie like that since she was 11 years old, Hawn revealed how Russell had said her daughter might be the greatest actress of all time, adding, \u201cAnd he does not say those things.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawn recalled on the panel, \u201cWhen I first saw this movie, Kurt and I were sitting together and it wasn\u2019t totally put together yet. So it wasn\u2019t color corrected, there were certain things they needed to do and balance the sound and everything and make it the whole finished movie. But the two of us held onto each other and cried.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the minute you did the\u00a0Patsy Cline\u00a0song!\u201d Hawn told Hudson, 46. \u201cI mean, literally cried. And it was like one of those moments where we thought, \u2018What have we just seen?\u2019 And it was such [an] extraordinary surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudson plays Claire in the movie, which is based on the real-life\u00a0Neil Diamond\u00a0tribute band Lightning & Thunder. The character ends up forming a tribute band with Mike Sardina (played by\u00a0Hugh Jackman) in 1989, before their professional relationship turns romantic.<\/p>\n

During Tuesday\u2019s panel, Hawn compared Jackman\u2019s character to Russell as Hudson commented on the film being \u201cabout chosen family, too, which was something that\u2019s very relatable to us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawn said, \u201cYou know, he looked so much like Kurt,\u201d as Hudson laughed, while Hawn continued, \u201cBecause actually that\u2019s what Kurt did, came into my life and took on our family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudson commented, \u201cIt\u2019s a heroic thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Russell and Hawn share four kids: Boston Russell, who Kurt welcomed with ex Season Hubley; Kate and\u00a0Oliver Hudson\u00a0from Goldie\u2019s past relationship with\u00a0Bill Hudson; and their youngest\u00a0Wyatt Russell. After Bill and Hawn finalized their divorce in 1982, she started dating Russell in 1983, with Kate having considered him to be her stepdad for over 40 years.<\/p>\n

Hawn\u2019s comments about being in tears while watching\u00a0Song Sung Blue<\/em>\u00a0isn\u2019t the first time the family has spoken about getting emotional.<\/p>\n

Hudson, who was nominated for a\u00a0Golden Globe\u00a0this year after starring in director Craig Brewer\u2019s musical biopic, told PEOPLE in December 2025 that\u00a0the film had her crying \u201cevery day.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI cry every day \u2018cause every time Hugh and I start talking about the movie, we get so emotional,\u201d the\u00a0Glass Onion<\/em>\u00a0actress said.<\/p>\n

She admitted, \u201cI cry really easy. I\u2019m an easy crier. \u2026 I could look at an Instagram and start [crying]. Especially [posts] of kids saying something profound will make me cry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I probably cry at least once every other day,\u201d Hudson added. \u201cCrying is always a good thing. It really is.\u201d<\/p>\n

She insisted that her mom, Hawn, brother Oliver and other family members were constantly in touch with their feelings, as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all criers,\u201d Hudson told PEOPLE. \u201cOur whole family, everybody but maybe Pa [Russell] and Wyatt,\u201d adding, \u201cWe\u2019re pretty emotional.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudson\u2019s comments came after she spoke to PEOPLE about the film alongside her co-star Jackman, 57, at the\u00a02025 Gotham Awards\u00a0on Dec. 1.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis superpower is to connect, whether it\u2019s onstage, whether it\u2019s on set, whether it\u2019s with anyone and everyone. He just wants to connect, and he wants to make sure that everyone\u2019s happy,\u201d\u00a0Hudson explained, before addressing Jackman beside her. \u201cAnd at the same time, I learned that one of the greatest gifts that you can give people is that you actually have a desire to connect to them, and I think you give that to everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jackman responded, \u201cI learned a lot from Kate. I\u2019ve done almost 50 films, but somehow working with Kate \u2014 it\u2019s a very difficult thing to describe, but the mixture of being prepared and just being instinctive is a really fine line, and no one does it better than Kate Hudson.\u201d<\/p>\n
