According to Brewer, executives repeatedly questioned whether audiences would connect with the characters at the heart of the story \u2014 not because of the music, but because of \u201cthe way they\u2019re living.\u201d  \u201cThey didn\u2019t think people would like these characters,\u201d Brewer said. \u201cThat was the consistent message.\u201d  The resistance wasn\u2019t subtle. Brewer explained that the project was passed over again and again, with studios expressing concern that the film\u2019s grounded, working-class perspective \u2014 and its refusal to soften the realities of its characters\u2019 lives \u2014 made it a tough sell.  What makes the rejection striking is what happened next.  Despite the early pushback, Song Sung Blue has now officially premiered, finally reaching audiences after years of skepticism behind closed doors. Just look at the way they\u2019re living.\u2019 And I\u2019d say, \u2018What do you mean the way they\u2019re living?\u2019 They\u2019d say, \u2018Well, their house is cluttered and dirty.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Well, wait a minute. Hold on. These are some magical people. These are the type of people that I\u2019m related to. They go, \u2018Well, African American stories don\u2019t travel overseas,\u2019 or \u2018We\u2019re not going to make anything that remotely talks about the South because of the accents.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Okay,\u00a0<em>Forrest Gump<\/em>\u00a0had some Southern accents.\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018That\u2019s different.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n<p class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">In the case of\u00a0<em>Song Sung Blue<\/em>, Brewer said, \u201cHere I thought, there\u2019s no Southern accents in it. It\u2019s not particularly diverse. It\u2019s about this White couple. Yet, that mentality still existed. They worried audiences weren\u2019t really going to be into the story of these people in Milwaukee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_27-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">Hudson, 46, earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the film. She\u00a0told\u00a0<em>W<\/em>\u00a0Magazine\u00a0that she met the real-life Claire Sardina. (Jackman, 57, plays Mike, who died in 2006.)<\/p>\n<p id=\"mntl-sc-block_29-0\" class=\"comp mntl-sc-block mntl-sc-block-html\">\u201cYou\u00a0can\u2019t believe what these people went through,\u201d the actress told\u00a0<em>W<\/em>. \u201cWhen I read the script, I remember thinking, \u2018This can\u2019t all be true.\u2019 I met Claire on set. She\u2019s wonderful.
