Song Sung Blue<\/em>\u00a0director Craig Brewer said the true-story film was denied by several studios that thought audiences wouldn\u2019t \u201clike\u201d its Midwesterner characters.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone said no, and they were very, very vocal in saying no,\u201d Brewer\u00a0told\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0in an interview published Wednesday, Jan. 7.<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cEven places that I had made a lot of money for were like, \u2018We don\u2019t think audiences are going to like these people. Just look at the way they\u2019re living.\u2019 And I\u2019d say, \u2018What do you mean the way they\u2019re living?\u2019 They\u2019d say, \u2018Well, their house is cluttered and dirty.\u2019 I was like, \u2018Well, wait a minute. Hold on. These are some magical people. These are the type of people that I\u2019m related to. This is like my grandmother\u2019s house.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Song Sung Blue<\/em>\u00a0stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike and Claire Sardina, a musician duo from Milwaukee who gained notoriety as a Neil Diamond tribute group named Lightning & Thunder.<\/p>\n

Brewer, 54, credited production company Focus Features and distributor Universal for ultimately seeing the potential in the film, now in theaters.<\/p>\n

When\u00a0Variety<\/em>\u00a0asked the director if \u201cregional bias\u201d led other studio executives to pass on the project, he replied, \u201cI always face that.\u201d Brewer is known for past movies, including 2005\u2019s\u00a0Hustle & Flow<\/em>, 2011\u2019s\u00a0Footloose<\/em>\u00a0and 2019\u2019s\u00a0Dolemite Is My Name<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy whole career has been focused on two avenues, Southerners and African American stories,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery studio that you meet with immediately tells you how limited those audiences are. They go, \u2018Well, African American stories don\u2019t travel overseas,\u2019 or \u2018We\u2019re not going to make anything that remotely talks about the South because of the accents.\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Okay,\u00a0Forrest Gump<\/em>\u00a0had some Southern accents.\u2019 And they\u2019re like, \u2018That\u2019s different.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n

In the case of\u00a0Song Sung Blue<\/em>, Brewer said, \u201cHere I thought, there\u2019s no Southern accents in it. It\u2019s not particularly diverse. It\u2019s about this White couple. Yet, that mentality still existed. They worried audiences weren\u2019t really going to be into the story of these people in Milwaukee.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hudson, 46, earned a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in the film. She\u00a0told\u00a0W<\/em>\u00a0Magazine\u00a0that she met the real-life Claire Sardina. (Jackman, 57, plays Mike, who died in 2006.)<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u00a0can\u2019t believe what these people went through,\u201d the actress told\u00a0W<\/em>. \u201cWhen I read the script, I remember thinking, \u2018This can\u2019t all be true.\u2019 I met Claire on set. She\u2019s wonderful. I\u2019m so lucky I got to play her.\u201d<\/p>\n
